Here’s an easy recipe to have on hand for burgers, hot dogs, and I also use this as a base to make my sugar-free barbecue sauce and sugar-free steak sauce. It’s rich and flavorful, a little spicy, and not overly sweet.
The non-sugar sweetener I use in this recipe is allulose. Allulose has a similar taste and texture to table sugar, however it is not metabolized in your body the same way fructose (sugar). Allulose has the same chemical formula as fructose but is arranged differently. This difference in structure prevents your body from processing allulose the way it processes fructose.
Why this recipe works
The use of allulose in this recipe makes this recipe very similar in taste to store-bought ketchup. Allulose has a similar taste and texture to table sugar, and has the same chemical formula as fructose but is arranged differently. This difference in structure prevents your body from processing allulose the way it processes fructose. As a sugar substitute for those of us managing or reversing metabolic health issues, allulose does not appear to raise blood sugar or insulin levels as many other sugar free sweeteners out there do! You should test yourself to know for sure how you react to it, but I find it to be safe and has low-impact on my blood glucose.
Use this recipe as a base for other sauces
This isn’t just a ketchup! In fact I use this little gem of a recipe to make a steak sauce most of the time. Making this into a steak sauce for chicken or turkey burgers is also a delicious combo!
- Steak Sauce: Mix two tablespoons of ketchup with 1 tablespoon of Worcester’s sauce for a steak sauce
- Spicy ketchup: To make it a spicier ketchup, add a few dashes of your favorite hot sauce. I recommend additions such as Tabasco Chipotle, Tapatio, and Cholula hot sauces.
- Burger sauce: Combine 1 tablespoon each of ketchup, mayo and dill pickle relish or chopped pickle for a burger sauce
